Benefits and Harms of Our Societal Response
to COVID
-
The trolley dilemma: Do we switch the train from track 1 to track 2?
-
Track 1: Allow COVID to run its course and kill 1 additional COVID person with 4 years of life remaining.
-
Track 2: Divert the train to save that 1 person from COVID death but kill other much younger people from suicide resulting in 2x the person-years of life lost, throw 316 others into major depression resulting in 30x the person-years of life lost, throw 127 people out of work, impair education for 350 children and young people by closing their schools, subject a few children and adults to a beating from their domestic abuser, and make 1,640 people at least a little lonelier and less happy.
